It’s been some time since I’ve blogged, so this post is going to cover a few things I’ve been digging lately, and are worthy of your attention. First and foremost, I’ve been listening a lot to the new Michael Monroe album ‘Sensory Overdrive’. This is an AMAZING rock n roll record. From top to bottom, every song is classic, memorable Hanoi/Thunders style rock n roll. I’d go so far as to say that this is the best album Monroe has released since the Demolition 23 CD, which was also consistently strong. His albums over recent years (including the reformed Hanoi stuff) have had some great tunes, but as a whole, there was some inconsistency. No sign of any flaws on ‘Sensory Overdrive’, just one great tune after another. His band includes Sam Yaffa and Steve Conte (both ex New York Dolls) as well as Ginger from the Wildhearts. If you buy no other album this year – this is the one you need. Check out the track ‘Gone baby Gone’, which includes Lucinda Williams on vocals………Talking of Lucinda Williams, her current album ‘Blessed’. Does Lucinda know how to make a bad album? Her songs are magnificent, she’s the real deal, and has been for a long time now. Songs like ‘Seeing Black’ on her new album are superb, and worthy of your attention. If you have never heard any of Lucinda’s stuff, check out her Grammy Award winning album from the late 90’s called ‘Car Wheels On A Gravel Road’. This is a consummate album. Phoneys like Kasey Chambers ape her sound badly, but lack the integrity that Williams possesses in spades……….If you are looking for a cool podcast to download, Rockbrat approved, check out Glam Bone. Mr Rockbrat hipped me to Glam Bone and I’ve been addicted to it, as it focus’ only on glam metal bands from the LA / Hollywood scene of the late 80’s. Lots of demos are played from lesser known bands, and the guy has a great sense of humour to boot. Check it out here.
