Since forming in 2016, Sydney outfit Molly and the Krells have been earning their rock n roll stripes the hard way: endless hours of band practice, before sweating it out to punters in pubs across the city. I’ve kept a watchful eye on ’em since their inception and with good reason. This is a band whose overall sound seems to get stronger with time – and if the just released single ‘What Went Wrong’ is any indication – this is an outfit all set for the next level.
Readers of this blog will know I’m a sucker for hooks and melody – if the song ain’t got my attention ten seconds in, count me out.
Suffice to say ‘What Went Wrong‘ had me quickly hitting the repeat button. The single is short, sharp and slick – and as was the case with their previous single ‘Rejected‘ – a song with enormous commercial appeal. If I was a programmer at Triple J I’d be making a note of ‘What What Wrong‘. It’s got enough of the good stuff to capture the ears of suburban and regional teens, inner city punks and even aging rock soldiers.

Molly and the Krells are Blake Cateris (bass/vocals) Ian Knighton (guitars), Dan Taylor (guitar) and Christian Scanu (drums). They’ve so far cut two well received EP’s: the debut ‘Losing Friends’, which was followed up by the impressive 2018 outing ‘Relationshit’.
Some time back, the band went through a line-up shuffle with guitarist Dan Taylor joining the line-up. “It took a while but we eventually found Dan and he’s been in the band or I think we just realized last week that he’s been in the band for just over a year now” explained Cateris. “He’s awesome. He’s not exactly the same kind of player as the person that he replaced (Hayden) but he brings his own thing to the table. He’s a good guitarist, and he’s creative with his part”.
As a devoted music fan, I am always intrigued by the songwriting process and something I quizzed Blake about – focusing on the stark catchiness of the aforementioned ‘Rejected’ and the new single ‘What Went Wrong’…
“I guess that’s just what I gravitate towards. It’s just my songwriting preference really. What comes naturally to me is just trying to find a melody that would stick in your head. It doesn’t always work – but I guess for those two songs it worked.
When we wrapped up recording that ‘Losing Friends’ EP we listened to the five songs and everyone was like ‘okay yeah definitely ‘Rejected’ needs to be the first song – it needs to be the first single’. It opens with the quick little drum fill and then with the chorus – and then you’re into the song. It gives you the hook straight up instead of having to wait for a verse, a pre-chorus and then the chorus.”
